Dr. Leemon Baird is the inventor of the Hashgraph consensus algorithm and co-founder of Hedera Hashgraph, a high-performance, energy-efficient alternative to traditional blockchain systems. With a PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University, he has a strong academic background and has authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers. Baird’s Hashgraph uses a novel “gossip-about-gossip” protocol with virtual voting to achieve fast, secure, and fair consensus without mining. In 2015, he co-founded Swirlds (now Hashgraph Labs) to commercialize this technology and later launched Hedera as a public network governed by leading global enterprises like Google and IBM.
Baird served as Chief Scientist of Hedera until 2022, when he transitioned to focus on protocol development at Hashgraph Labs. He continues to play a central role in Hedera’s technical direction as co-chair of its Technical and Token Economics committees. His work has earned industry recognition for redefining distributed ledger technology (DLT), with Hedera becoming a leading platform for enterprise-grade decentralized applications.
