“With decentralized AI, it’s really a positive-sum game where everyone is making money,” he says. This model not only incentivizes more innovation but also spreads the benefits across the community, making it more inclusive and collaborative.
For Peng, the key to driving the future of AI lies in building long-term value. He believes that centralized systems, while currently dominant, have inherent limitations. They are closed, restricted, and don’t provide enough opportunities for the broader community to participate or benefit.
“In centralized AI, companies are making billions,” Peng notes, “but in decentralized AI, everyone is making money.” This decentralized approach shifts the focus from a few big players controlling the space to a more open ecosystem where everyone has the potential to profit and contribute. Peng believes this shift will foster a greater sense of innovation and collaboration across the board, helping the technology reach new heights.
Additionally, Peter sees this as the way forward for governance systems as well. “We don’t want to be the overarching governance platform,” he says, explaining that decentralization is key to avoiding centralized control. Web 3 and Web 4 communities can manage their own projects through decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), building on decentralized protocols to maintain openness and transparency. This type of community-driven governance will play a significant role in the evolution of decentralized AI.
Peng’s vision extends beyond AI and blockchain into what he calls Web 4. Unlike previous iterations of the web, which were built on centralized infrastructures, Web 4 represents a convergence of various emerging technologies, including AI, blockchain, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and more. It’s not just a new version of the internet; it’s a reimagining of how all these technologies interact and integrate.
“My vision is that Web 4 will allow humanity to own AI,” Peng asserts. He envisions a future where decentralized AI and autonomous applications operate on top of this new web, running independently yet communicating with each other. These autonomous applications will facilitate AI-to-AI transactions and human-to-AI interactions, all while operating on decentralized platforms like blockchain.
“Web 4 is about creating a symbiotic web,” Peng says, “where everything starts to work together and converges.” In this vision, AI will no longer be limited to specific functions or use cases. Instead, it will become a central part of a new internet infrastructure that allows for autonomous, intelligent systems to interact freely and independently.
Peng also envisions a future where AI will have its own internet—a network built specifically for AI applications and interactions. This new internet will coexist alongside the current web and provide a space for AI-to-AI and human-to-AI interactions, creating an ecosystem that supports the next generation of technologies.
“I think there’s a new internet emerging that’s specifically for AI,” Peng explains, “and it will be a whole new type of experience.” This AI internet will be designed to handle the unique needs of artificial intelligence, including data fetching, processing, and creating, all in real-time.
One of the biggest challenges in AI over the past decade has been accessing clean, real-world data in real time. According to Peng, the current data sets used for training AI models are often outdated or limited, which restricts the potential for real-time intelligence. By building a decentralized, open internet for AI, Peng believes we can solve this problem and create a more intelligent, emergent collective intelligence.
Another crucial aspect of Peng’s vision is the role of federated learning and open datasets. In a decentralized AI world, AI models could train on distributed, real-world data in real-time, which would lead to more accurate and robust systems. Federated learning allows multiple AI models to learn from the same data without centralizing it, preserving privacy and enhancing security.
“Eventually, having an open data set that’s transparent will allow other models to train off of that open dataset,” Peng notes. This transparency is essential for fostering collaboration and innovation across the AI community. It will prevent the loop of models training on the same limited data sets, which Peng believes is currently holding back the development of more intelligent systems.
