Vitalik Buterin appears to have financially supported ethOS, a project touted as the world’s first Ethereum-based mobile operating system. Data from Arkham shows that Buterin transferred 199.9 ETH, worth over $517,000, to a Gnosis Safe multi-signature contract, which is believed to be a donation to ethOS. This open-source project, developed by Freedom Factory, was initially launched on select Android devices in late 2022 and redeployed in 2023.
- ethOS allows users to write blockchain code and deploy ETH-based decentralized applications, with plans for more hardware releases in the near future.
- The project highlights the blockchain industry’s ongoing efforts to integrate blockchain technology with mobile devices, a challenge that has seen gradual progress in recent years.
In comparison, Solana Labs introduced the Saga mobile device in June 2022, built on Android OS and pre-loaded with Solana dapps. Despite slow initial sales, Saga 2.0 saw a significant improvement with 100,000 units pre-ordered within a month. While Saga currently appears ahead, both ethOS and Saga are taking different paths toward merging blockchain and mobile technology, positioning themselves as potential competitors in this evolving market.
