Steady attention without excessive speculation.
5th March 2026- Aztec Network has released an updated product roadmap that marks a major milestone after eight years of development. The update confirms that the core code required to build privacy-preserving smart contracts on Ethereum is now complete. The roadmap introduces several important upgrades, including programmable privacy with both private and public states, a faster client-side proving system called CHONK, readiness for Stage 2 decentralization, and the upcoming 1.0 release of the Noir programming language.

@aztecnetwork God I cant wait to build unstoppable private apps on Aztec. Should I start learning Noir now, or will there be major breaking changes for Noir v1.0 that imply I should wait?

@aztecnetwork @ethereum eight years for privacy smart contracts. impresisve. but the code is only half the battle. the real work is just beginning.

Aztec Network roadmap update follows nearly a decade of research and development in zero-knowledge proof technology. The project began in 2018 as a zk-SNARK research initiative focused on enabling confidential transactions on Ethereum. Over time, the team expanded the vision and built a full Layer 2 network designed to support privacy-preserving smart contracts.
Several external developments accelerated progress toward this milestone. For example, Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade in 2024 reduced rollup costs and improved scalability for Layer 2 networks. At the same time, growing regulatory discussions around privacy and digital data protection increased interest in blockchain systems that allow selective transparency. Consequently, Aztec focused on improving its privacy infrastructure while making it easier for developers to build applications.
The project has also followed a staged rollout strategy. In 2023, Aztec introduced a multi-stage roadmap that began with a developer-focused local testnet called Milestone 1.0. Later, in November 2025, the network launched the Ignition Chain, its first decentralized Layer 2 environment. This early release introduced initial privacy features and attracted more than 185,000 users during its early months.
Then, in February 2026, the team shared additional plans to decentralize the prover network through 2027. Each update has gradually moved Aztec from experimental technology toward a production-ready privacy infrastructure.

The latest roadmap focuses on four major upgrades that together form Aztec’s privacy framework.
First, programmable privacy introduces a dual-state architecture that allows smart contracts to operate with both private and public states. Developers can therefore design hybrid applications where sensitive information remains encrypted while public data remains transparent.
Second, the proving system now incorporates CHONK, a client-side proving mechanism that significantly reduces proof generation time. Instead of requiring several minutes, users can generate proofs within seconds on standard hardware. This improvement makes privacy features more practical for everyday users.
Third, Aztec is preparing for Stage 2 decentralization. The roadmap includes distributed sequencers and decentralized provers that remove centralized points of control and increase network resilience.
Looking ahead, Aztec plans to launch its Alpha Network in early 2026 and complete mainnet decentralization later in the year. These steps could expand privacy capabilities across multiple blockchain sectors.
For example, decentralized finance applications could implement confidential lending and private trading strategies. Similarly, identity platforms and gaming ecosystems may adopt privacy-preserving infrastructure to protect user data.Institutional interest also appears to be growing. Coinbase recently added AZTEC to its listing roadmap, which may increase market exposure and liquidity if a listing occurs.
Overall, the updated roadmap signals that Aztec is approaching a new phase of development. After years of research and iteration, the network now appears closer to enabling programmable privacy for Ethereum applications.
