10th December 2025 – Celestia has officially confirmed support for 128MB blocks on its Mocha testnet, marking a major leap in modular blockchain scalability. The announcement, follows the Matcha (v6) upgrade, which overhauled data propagation to support larger blocks.
With this change, Mocha now supports up to 21.33 MB/s of permissionless data throughput, a 16x increase over the 8MB blocks seen on Celestia’s mainnet. This move brings the network closer to its long-term goal of supporting 1GB blocks and over 1.8TB of daily capacity.
Mocha is Celestia’s current public testnet. It succeeds Mamaki and is the proving ground for new upgrades before they hit mainnet. The push for 128MB blocks reflects Celestia’s core mission: separating data availability (DA) from execution, enabling rollups and modular apps to scale securely.
Celestia launched an earlier testnet (mamo-1) in April 2025 to prototype 128MB blocks using innovations like the Vacuum protocol and Validator Availability Certificates (VACs). Those innovations now underpin Mocha’s new capacity.
On December 8, Celestia confirmed: “128MB blocks are now possible on Mocha” via its official X post. This came after validator upgrades using celestia-app v6.0.5-mocha. Mocha recently processed over 156GB of data in a single day, massively outpacing Ethereum’s ~4GB/day.
Validators were advised to upgrade hardware to:
Mocha’s full transition to 128MB requires all nodes to align with new config standards. GitHub notes confirm all dependencies are now ready.
You can now test high-bandwidth use cases like:
Build resources are available at celestia.org/build.
The upgrade puts pressure on node storage and performance. Many validators are adopting hybrid setups (NVMe + HDD) to manage costs and reliability.
Matcha’s full upgrade went live on mainnet in late 2025. However, 128MB blocks will hit mainnet later, based on testnet success. The roadmap aims for 1GB blocks in future testnets.
