Dynex, a platform focused on neuromorphic quantum computing, has announced the upcoming launch of its Apollo chip, set for release in 2025. The Apollo chip is a critical component of the company’s 10-year roadmap, aimed at advancing the field of quantum computing by transitioning from GPU-based quantum emulation to physical quantum hardware.
The Apollo chip will feature 1,000 algorithmic qubits designed to perform quantum-probabilistic computations. Unlike traditional quantum systems that require extreme cooling, Apollo will operate at room temperature. This feature distinguishes it from most quantum computing systems, which typically rely on cryogenic temperatures.
The chip’s primary function will be to solve optimization tasks for various industries such as drug discovery, cryptography, and machine learning. These tasks will be handled by leveraging entangled photonic entropy, a feature that aids in processing complex computational problems.
Key Technical Specifications
The Apollo chip builds on Dynex’s neuromorphic computing approach, which uses memory-based systems (memprocessors) to process and store information simultaneously. This approach aims to tackle problems more efficiently than traditional von Neumann architectures.
The chip will also perform beyond-classical Random Circuit Sampling (RCS) tasks. Dynex claims that the Apollo chip will complete these tasks much faster than classical supercomputers, which would typically take trillions of years to do so.
Dynex raised $50 million in venture capital in 2024 to support the development of the Apollo chip and its subsequent hardware. With its focus on quantum computing, the company aims to capitalize on the growing demand for quantum solutions across various sectors.
The Apollo chip is just the first step in Dynex’s long-term plan for quantum computing. Over the next decade, the company plans to scale its technology, with subsequent chips slated to support up to 1 million qubits by 2034. The launch of Apollo will likely set the stage for more significant developments in quantum hardware, but it remains to be seen how these chips will perform once they enter real-world applications.
