FIFA is officially entering the blockchain game. The global football governing body has partnered with Avalanche to launch a dedicated Layer 1 blockchain.
This new network, called the FIFA Blockchain, will run on Avalanche’s high-speed infrastructure. It aims to deliver fan engagement tools and support FIFA’s digital collectibles.
The blockchain will host FIFA’s NFT platform, FIFA Collect. This collection will migrate from its current homes on Algorand and Polygon. Avalanche’s infrastructure is expected to improve scalability, lower transaction fees, and support high user demand—especially during events like the World Cup.
Avalanche said its technology was built to handle global-scale traffic. FIFA’s audience includes up to five billion fans during major tournaments.
The FIFA Blockchain will be Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible. That means users can interact with it using wallets like MetaMask and apps built for Ethereum.
The move to EVM is part of a broader trend toward blockchain standardization. FIFA’s migration aims to streamline wallet access and bring in more Web3 users.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino teased the idea of a FIFA Coin earlier this year. At a crypto roundtable in Washington D.C., he suggested the coin could launch in the U.S. and reach fans worldwide. While the new blockchain’s launch doesn’t include a token yet, speculation around a possible FIFA Coin continues.
While the immediate focus is on moving FIFA Collect, the new blockchain may support more in the future. Avalanche hinted that the network is purpose-built for long-term fan experiences. FIFA also mentioned that future products are in development but didn’t provide details.
The project follows Avalanche’s “Avalanche9000” upgrade, which makes launching custom blockchains cheaper and easier. FIFA’s entry could attract more institutional interest in the Avalanche ecosystem.
