Abu Dhabi-based climate tech platform GIGATONS has announced Alephium as the foundational blockchain for its GIGA Protocol. This strategic partnership aims to leverage Alephium’s scalable and energy-efficient blockchain to drive the global transition to net-zero emissions.
Unveiled during Abu Dhabi Finance Week, GIGATONS focuses on reducing the 59 gigatons of annual carbon emissions required to achieve net zero by 2050. Its GIGA Protocol integrates blockchain, AI, and advanced sustainable energy technologies to tokenize investments, validate carbon credits, and ensure transparency in climate projects.
Alephium’s blockchain technology underpins this initiative, enabling the tokenization of real-world assets and verification of carbon impacts. GIGATONS plans to mobilize and tokenize $100 billion over the next decade using this platform.
After a thorough evaluation, GIGATONS selected Alephium for its unique capabilities in scalability, security, and sustainability.
“After evaluating all options, Alephium stood out as the only decentralized blockchain able to deliver the scalability, security, programmability, and sustainability we need,” said Heston Harper, Co-CEO of GIGATONS and CEO of GIGATECH.
Alephium founder Cheng Wang added, “Our partnership with GIGATONS validates our mission to build a scalable and sustainable blockchain that drives real-world impact.”
Headquartered in the Abu Dhabi Global Market, GIGATONS collaborates with government and private sector leaders to scale net-zero projects. Initial projects include an EV charging network in Australia and a solar-powered Bitcoin mining initiative with verifiable on-chain carbon accreditation.
By integrating blockchain with green finance, GIGATONS aims to inspire confidence in climate investments and attract global capital for impactful projects. This initiative also aligns with broader regulatory pushes for transparency in climate financing, including efforts in the U.S., Australia, and Brazil.
The GIGATONS-Alephium partnership exemplifies how blockchain can support climate action without compromising environmental goals. By combining transparency, trust, and sustainability, this collaboration offers a blueprint for using technology to tackle climate change on a global scale.
