Kraken has officially named Cheyenne, Wyoming as its global headquarters, marking a major move for the U.S.-based cryptocurrency exchange after more than three years without a physical base. The decision reflects Krakenâs growing alignment with Wyomingâs crypto-friendly regulatory environment and builds on years of investment in the stateâs digital asset ecosystem.
Kraken cited Wyomingâs leadership in crypto regulation and its âconstructiveâ policy environment as the key reasons for the move. The state has passed over 30 crypto-specific laws, including legal recognition of digital assets as property and protections against forced disclosure of private keys. It also runs a dedicated fintech sandbox for blockchain innovation.
âWyoming has created the perfect environment for digital asset companies to thrive,â said U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis, one of the most vocal crypto advocates in Congress. âKrakenâs decision to relocate⊠reinforces Wyomingâs position as Americaâs premier crypto hub.â
Krakenâs move comes after it left San Francisco in 2022, citing employee safety concerns. The company had been operating in a remote-first structure without a physical headquarters since then. With this latest announcement, Kraken becomes one of the most valuable companies now officially headquartered in Wyoming.
Krakenâs relationship with Wyoming is not new. In 2021, the company donated $300,000 to the University of Wyoming to support blockchain education and has sponsored several blockchain-focused events, including the Wyoming Blockchain Stampede and Hackathon.
In 2023, it co-hosted the Wyoming Blockchain Symposium in Jackson Hole, gathering builders, investors, and policymakers to discuss the future of crypto regulation. These initiatives laid the foundation for Krakenâs deeper involvement in the state.
Wyoming isnât just a regulatory leader. The state is planning to issue its own stablecoin and has floated proposals for a strategic Bitcoin reserve, further underlining its pro-digital asset stance.
Custodia Bank founder Caitlin Long celebrated the move, calling it a win for the state:
âKraken is likely the most valuable company headquartered in Wyoming now.â
As more crypto firms look for regulatory certainty and supportive jurisdictions, Krakenâs relocation underscores how Wyoming has quietly emerged as a leading destination for digital asset innovation in the U.S.
