Ross Ulbricht, the controversial creator of Silk Road, has received an anonymous donation of 300 Bitcoin , worth over $31 million — now believed to have originated from AlphaBay, a dark web marketplace even larger than Silk Road in its prime.
Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis has linked the source of the funds to wallets connected with AlphaBay, once the biggest darknet marketplace before its takedown in 2017. The sizable transfer was made on June 1, just days after Ulbricht’s public reappearance at the Bitcoin 2025 conference.
The donation sparked widespread speculation in the crypto community. While the identity of the sender remains unknown, Chainalysis said it had “reasonable grounds” to believe the Bitcoin came from a former AlphaBay user or vendor.
The Bitcoin was funneled through mixers like Jambler, a common tactic used to obscure transaction history. The anonymity points toward someone trying to avoid attention — possibly due to legal or reputational concerns.
Taylor Monahan of MetaMask commented that donors often act out of gratitude, inspiration, or remorse. In Ulbricht’s case, all three may apply.
Ulbricht was arrested in 2013 and sentenced to life without parole for his role in running Silk Road, a platform that facilitated anonymous drug sales using Bitcoin. But on January 21, 2025, President Donald Trump issued a surprise pardon, freeing him after nearly 11 years behind bars.
Since then, Ulbricht has re-engaged with the crypto community. At the Bitcoin 2025 conference in Las Vegas, he gave an emotional speech advocating for decentralization and thanked supporters for “never forgetting him.” He also auctioned personal belongings — including his prison ID card — for over $1.8 million in Bitcoin.
AlphaBay launched in 2014, a year after Ulbricht’s arrest. It eventually grew to host over 250,000 product listings — dwarfing Silk Road — before being shut down in a coordinated law enforcement operation in 2017.
That a large stash of AlphaBay-era Bitcoin has been dormant until now raises questions. “The value of these holdings has grown more than 40x since 2017,” noted Phil Larratt, a former UK cybercrime investigator. Whether the donation was repayment, tribute, or part of a deeper legacy is still unknown.
Despite years in prison, Ulbricht may now control significant wealth. Arkham Intelligence reports that over 430 BTC, worth more than $47 million, sit in wallets connected to him — untouched for over a decade and never seized by authorities. The recent donation only adds to that total.
The mystery behind the donation — and its scale — has reignited conversations about early Bitcoin adopters, dark web history, and crypto’s complex moral terrain. Ulbricht and his Free Ross campaign have declined to comment.
While Ulbricht’s supporters view him as a pioneer punished too harshly, critics see his reemergence — and now immense wealth — as a troubling development. Either way, the 300 BTC donation is a powerful reminder of crypto’s roots and unresolved legacies.
