Ross Ulbricht, the former operator of the Silk Road marketplace, has received a donation of 300 Bitcoinâvalued at over $31 million, to his public donation wallet. The funds began flowing in shortly after his emotional appearance at the Bitcoin 2025 conference, where he addressed the community for the first time as a free man.
The Bitcoin donation marks a major show of support from the crypto world, long divided on Ulbrichtâs legacy but united in recent years by growing calls for clemency and reform. Ulbricht was granted a full and unconditional pardon by President Donald Trump in January 2025 after serving more than a decade of a double life sentence plus 40 years.
Ulbrichtâs remarks at the Bitcoin conference were met with standing ovations. He reflected on the years he spent in prison and thanked the Bitcoin community for its unwavering support.
âYou didnât abandon me. You didnât forget me. You wrote me letters. You raised money for my defense,â he said, visibly emotional. âWhen I was silenced, you spoke up against the slander and the smears.â
Ulbricht also spoke about the disorienting experience of reentering a world transformed by technology. âWhen I walked out of prison a few months ago, Iâd never seen a drone, used AI, or tried VR. Now itâs all hitting me at once â the freedom, the technology, the fact that I have a future again.â
Just days before the conference, Ulbrichtâs personal items were auctioned off for a total of $1.8 million, with his final prison ID card alone fetching over 11 BTCâaround $1.1 million. The funds raised went to his legal defense and reintegration efforts.
In an unexpected gesture, TRON founder Justin Sun also donated the artwork Comedian, famously featuring a banana duct-taped to a wall and once purchased for $6.2 million, to Ulbrichtâs cause.
Ulbricht closed his speech by urging the cryptocurrency community to remain grounded in core ideals.
âWith so much speed and chaos, itâs more important than ever to stay true to our principles,â he said. âFreedom, decentralization, unityâstay true to these, and the future is ours.â
The release came after years of advocacy led by the Free Ross campaign, which included legal appeals, petitions, and fundraising efforts. At the height of the campaign, over 600,000 people signed a petition calling for clemency.
His case, once a symbol of harsh sentencing in the digital age, is now a rallying point for renewed discussions about online privacy, state overreach, and the boundaries of decentralization.
Though no longer incarcerated, Ulbrichtâs journey continuesâand with millions in fresh support from the crypto community, he may now have the resources to chart a new chapter.
