E-commerce giant Shopify has launched native support for USDC stablecoin payments via the Base blockchain, partnering with Coinbase and Stripe to integrate the feature directly into its checkout infrastructure. The move is seen as one of the most significant real-world rollouts of stablecoins in online retail to date.
The new payment option is live in early access, enabling merchants worldwide to accept USDC without needing to adopt crypto workflows or integrate third-party services. Buyers can pay using hundreds of supported walletsâincluding through guest checkout or Shop Payâand merchants can choose between receiving payouts in local fiat or in USDC.
The system leverages a new smart contract protocol co-developed by Coinbase, bringing crypto payments in line with real-world checkout needs. It supports features like inventory reservation, tax finalization, and even multi-step authorization, mimicking credit card functionality but on-chain.
This new capability is not a plugin or an add-on; itâs embedded at the protocol level into Shopify Payments.
USDC, a regulated, fiat-backed stablecoin issued by Circle, has seen rapid adoption. Its monthly volume has surpassed $1 trillion, and its consistent 1:1 peg to the U.S. dollar removes volatility risk for merchants and shoppers alike.
This rollout on Base, Coinbaseâs Ethereum Layer 2 network, ensures low fees and fast settlements, further reducing friction. It also helps expand borderless commerce, allowing merchants to transact with customers globally, without foreign exchange complications or transaction delays.
Stripe simplifies the merchant experience, abstracting away all crypto complexity. No wallet handling. No onboarding hurdles. For many merchants, itâs business as usualâonly faster.
Coinbase, meanwhile, provides the blockchain backend and the smart contract logic. Together, the infrastructure allows instant finality, reduced fraud risks, and settlement flexibility.
Future plans include customer incentives like 1% cashback in local currency, powered by the underlying smart contract framework.
Crypto payment solutions have been attempted before, from BitPay to Lightning Network integrations. But many suffered from poor UX, price volatility, or regulatory issues. Shopifyâs rollout stands apart due to:
