August 14, 2025 – The Sui blockchain has overtaken Solana in daily active users (DAU) for the first time, marking a notable shift in the Layer-1 competitive landscape. On-chain analytics show Sui registering around 3.5 million daily active addresses on August 13, edging past Solana’s 3.3 million.
The flip comes after a 79% surge in Sui’s daily active accounts over just 72 hours, driven by expanding DeFi, gaming, and NFT ecosystems. This isn’t Sui’s first challenge to Solana’s dominance, it previously surpassed Solana in daily transactions in October 2024 and monthly stablecoin transfers in July 2025.
Launched in 2023 by Mysten Labs, Sui uses the Move programming language and parallel transaction processing to deliver low fees and high throughput. Recent adoption has been fueled by smart accounts, GameFi partnerships, and features aimed at developers seeking alternatives to Solana.
While Solana still maintains a strong lead in total value locked (TVL) at $5.5 billion versus Sui’s $1 billion, its DAU growth has slowed amid market volatility and ongoing concerns over centralization and network stability.
Crypto analysts and media outlets quickly picked up the news. Coin Bureau called it a “big shift in network activity,” while Cointelegraph labeled the event “HUGE” for Layer-1 competition. Messari data suggests Solana still leads in quarterly DAU averages (4 million vs. Sui’s 1.1 million), but Sui’s recent surge in stablecoin transfers double Solana’s in June indicates momentum may be shifting.
Investors took notice as well, with Sui’s native token ($SUI) historically gaining up to 12% in similar “flip” events. Institutional confidence appears to be growing, with $11.7 million in inflows recorded for Sui in May 2025, compared to Solana’s net outflows during the same period.
Skeptics point out that Solana’s established meme coin and DeFi ecosystems still give it an edge in user stickiness. Whether Sui’s DAU advantage will persist may depend on sustaining developer engagement, onboarding new users, and maintaining competitive transaction costs.
As blockchain adoption accelerates, this DAU milestone fuels the debate over which network will dominate the next phase of scalable Layer-1 growth. For now, Sui has shown it can challenge the status quo—and the market is watching closely.
The Move programming language used by Sui was originally developed for Facebook’s Libra/Diem project, giving Sui a unique origin story in blockchain’s tech evolution.
