18th December 2025 – Tether, the company behind the USDT stablecoin, has officially launched PearPass, a peer-to-peer password manager that puts complete control in the hands of users. The app eliminates cloud-based storage and instead relies on local storage and encrypted device-to-device syncing. According to Tether, this design greatly reduces the risk of mass data leaks, a problem that has compromised more than 16 billion passwords globally.
PearPass is now available on desktop, mobile, and browser platforms, and is the first open-source app built on Tether’s Pears ecosystem – a collection of decentralized tools focused on privacy and user sovereignty.
The official launch took place on December 17, 2025, following months of development and early previews from Tether CTO Paolo Ardoino. The company positioned PearPass as a direct response to rising threats from centralized password managers, some of which have been repeatedly breached in recent years.
Tether emphasized that PearPass is more than just a password manager. It’s a tool for digital resilience, reflecting the company’s broader mission to decentralize critical online services.
To get started, users set a master password on their primary device, such as a desktop. This creates a local, encrypted vault. To sync additional devices, users simply scan a QR code or paste a vault link and enter the master password.
From that point, all credentials remain fully encrypted and stored locally. Real-time sync across devices is enabled via end-to-end encrypted P2P connections, not cloud servers. This ensures no data touches a centralized backend, making it more resistant to , outages, or surveillance.
PearPass ships with a number of core features that prioritize usability and privacy:
Security sits at the core of PearPass. Tether worked with Secfault Security, a firm known for offensive security and cryptography, to complete an independent audit of the app.
Since PearPass removes cloud storage, central servers, and third‑party access, users keep full control of their data at all times. The platform also relies on open-source cryptographic libraries, which improves transparency and trust.
In addition, users manage their own recovery keys. This approach eliminates backdoors, emergency resets, or admin overrides, creating a system where only the user holds access.
PearPass runs on Pear Runtime, an open-source framework for building peer‑to‑peer applications. Through this foundation, Tether aims to expand the Pears ecosystem with more privacy‑focused tools, including wallets, tunnels, and location‑sharing apps. The company sees this direction as a clear step toward user‑owned, resilient infrastructure.
Furthermore, Tether encourages community participation. Developers and users can review the code, offer improvements, and join conversations on Keet.io, a peer‑to‑peer chat app connected to the Pears platform.
PearPass is free to download and use. It is also available across major device types, making onboarding easier:
Mobile: iOS (App Store ID: 6752954830) and Android (Google Play or GitHub APK)
Browser: Chrome extension available today, with more browsers planned
Desktop: Windows and Linux installers
