26th December 2025 – Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin believes that Grok, the AI chatbot integrated into Elon Musk’s X, has had a surprisingly positive impact on the platform’s relationship with the truth.
In a post on December 26, Buterin said Grok helps counter political bias by catching users off guard. “The easy ability to call Grok on Twitter is probably the biggest thing after Community Notes that has been positive for the truth-friendliness of this platform,” he wrote.
Importantly, Buterin noted that users can’t predict how Grok will respond. This, he said, is a strength. “I’ve seen many situations where someone calls on Grok expecting their crazy political belief to be confirmed and Grok comes along and rugs them.”
Although he sees Grok as a net positive for public discourse, Buterin admitted there are valid concerns. One of them is how Grok might be influenced by its creator Elon Musk or by certain users who help shape its fine-tuning.
Last month, Grok sparked backlash after it made bizarre claims about Musk’s athleticism and suggested he could have resurrected faster than Jesus Christ. Musk later blamed these responses on “adversarial prompting,” a method used to make AI models produce extreme or nonsensical outputs.
The incident brought renewed focus on the need for AI to remain unbiased, especially as more people rely on it for information. Industry experts, including Aethir CTO Kyle Okamoto, warn that centralized AI models risk institutionalizing bias. If a single company owns and trains the system, it may assert subjective views as fact.
“When the most powerful AI systems are governed by one company, algorithmic bias becomes institutionalized knowledge,” Okamoto said. “At that point, bias stops being a bug. It becomes the logic of the system.”
Grok, developed by Musk’s xAI, is one of the world’s most widely used AI chatbots. With more than 1 billion people interacting with AI tools, a flawed or biased response has the potential to mislead at scale.
Buterin has previously pushed for more transparent AI systems. Last week, he argued that developers should use zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs) to verify algorithmic decisions without revealing private data.
These cryptographic tools, he said, would help users confirm that systems act fairly. “ZK-prove every decision made by the algorithm,” Buterin urged. He also recommended on-chain timestamps and delayed code releases as ways to build public trust.
Together, these tools would make it easier to verify whether platforms like X are working as intended. They could also reduce the risk of manipulation or bias, especially in AI systems that serve millions of users.
Grok is not the only chatbot facing scrutiny. OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been criticized for biased or factually incorrect outputs. Meanwhile, Character.ai recently came under fire for enabling disturbing conversations with minors.
Buterin believes these examples show how important it is to design systems that encourage truth over confirmation bias. While Grok still has issues, he sees it as a step forward in making X more aligned with reality—even if it occasionally embarrasses the user who summoned it.
