Pierre Poilievre Gains Momentum as Crypto-Friendly PM Candidate In Canada

Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s Conservative Party and an outspoken advocate for cryptocurrency, has emerged as a strong contender for Prime Minister. His rise follows Justin Trudeau’s announcement of plans to step down as Liberal Party leader and PM once a successor is chosen.

Prediction markets show mixed forecasts for Poilievre’s chances. Polymarket gives him an 89% probability of winning, though Kalshi, a U.S.-based platform, projects a much lower 16%, with Chrystia Freeland and Mark Carney leading its odds. Polymarket had previously accurately predicted Trudeau’s resignation.

Poilievre’s pro-crypto stance has earned him widespread support among blockchain enthusiasts. He has publicly opposed central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), backing Bill C-400 to regulate their use. Poilievre has also emphasized the role of Bitcoin as an alternative to address inflation, stating, “Government is ruining the Canadian dollar, so Canadians should have the freedom to use other money, such as Bitcoin.”

In 2022, Poilievre revealed his personal interest in digital assets by investing in Purpose Bitcoin ETF, though his current holdings remain undisclosed. His platform promotes treating cryptocurrencies like commodities for tax purposes and creating favorable regulations to attract blockchain companies to Canada.

The Conservative leader has also called for financial freedom and reduced government control, marking a stark contrast to Trudeau’s more cautious approach to crypto, which included freezing certain wallets linked to protests. Poilievre’s broader campaign focuses on economic independence, with slogans like “Axe the Tax. Build the Homes. Fix the Budget. Stop the Crime.”

Since joining Parliament in 2004, Poilievre has been a consistent advocate for smaller government and individual liberties. As Canada anticipates a change in leadership, his vision of integrating crypto into the nation’s financial system positions him as a transformative candidate.
