August 27, 2025, The Solana ecosystem is making another push into consumer hardware with the launch of its first handheld console. Play Solana gaming device shipments begin on October 6, bringing Web3 functionality to portable gaming.
Play Solana, a project dedicated to integrating gaming with blockchain, announced it will ship its first console the Play Solana gaming device, or PSG1 on October 6.
The handheld unit comes with gaming-focused specifications, including an octa-core ARM processor, 8 gigabytes of RAM, wireless connectivity, and a touchscreen LCD. Beyond traditional gaming hardware, the console is also a Web3 gateway, featuring a built-in hardware wallet and fingerprint authentication for secure crypto asset management while playing.
To support the launch, Play Solana introduced a limited non-fungible token (NFT) collection of 2,000 passes. Holders will receive early access and ecosystem-related perks.
The console builds on Solana’s previous hardware ventures. In 2022, Solana Mobile launched the Saga smartphone, an Android-based device with integrated Web3 features such as a Seed Vault and a decentralized app store.
Saga gained traction in 2023 after users discovered it came with a free BONK memecoin airdrop, pushing resale prices as high as $5,000 on secondary markets, compared with its $599 retail price. In 2024, Solana introduced its second-generation device and, by 2025, secured 150,000 pre-orders worth an estimated $67.5 million in revenue. The Seeker phone began shipping in August 2025 to more than 50 countries.
Solana is not alone in targeting Web3-native gaming. In 2024, Mysten Labs, creator of the Sui blockchain, announced its own handheld console, the SuiPlay0X1. The device is expected to ship in the first half of 2025, signaling competition among blockchain projects to expand into hardware.
The launch of the Play Solana gaming device reflects a broader trend of blockchain networks moving into consumer hardware. By embedding crypto wallets, DApp integration, and biometric security, these devices attempt to merge mainstream gaming with decentralized ownership.
While Saga proved that incentives like airdrops can create hype, the long-term success of blockchain hardware will rely on real adoption, gaming partnerships, and whether users prefer Web3-native devices over traditional consoles. With competitors like Sui preparing their own devices, the market could become a testing ground for whether Web3 hardware can reach a broader gaming audience.
The Play Solana gaming device marks a new phase in Solana’s hardware strategy. Shipping in October, it blends gaming-ready performance with Web3 functionality, aiming to attract both gamers and crypto users.
