World Liberty Financial (WLFI), a decentralized finance (DeFi) project backed by former U.S. President Donald Trump and his sons, has completed its token sale, raising $550 million. The project confirmed the fundraising milestone in an update on its official website.
WLFI launched in September with the goal of advancing decentralized finance and promoting US dollar-pegged stablecoins to support the dollar’s global financial dominance. Its primary offering is a DeFi lending platform, similar to Aave, which operates on the Ethereum blockchain and supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins.
The public sale of WLFI’s governance token began on October 15. Initially, the token struggled to gain traction, raising only $11 million from the sale of 766 million tokens. However, demand surged in later phases, leading to a sellout of the offering.
The project is publicly represented by Donald Trump’s sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., while Barron Trump is named as its “DeFi visionary.” Despite these associations, the project’s whitepaper states that the Trump family does not own or manage WLFI. However, they may receive compensation for their involvement.
Tron founder Justin Sun emerged as the largest investor in World Liberty Financial. In November, he purchased $30 million worth of WLFI tokens. On January 19, he expanded his holdings with an additional $45 million investment, bringing his total stake to $75 million.
The DeFi platform aims to create an open financial system that operates independently of centralized control. It plans to offer various blockchain-based financial products and services.
Despite the recent fundraising success, WLFI has faced financial challenges. Reports indicate that the project recorded $110 million in losses following the latest altcoin market downturn. The long-term impact of this downturn on WLFI’s ecosystem remains uncertain.
The sellout of WLFI’s token sale signals strong investor interest in the project despite recent market turbulence. While high-profile endorsements and major investments add credibility, the platform still faces significant challenges, including past losses and market volatility.
For investors, WLFI represents an opportunity in the DeFi space, but risks remain. The project’s ability to execute its roadmap and navigate market downturns will be key to its long-term success. As always, investors should conduct their own research and assess risk before making any financial decisions. (Not Financial Advice – NFA)
Most of the crypto community was unimpressed and made either negative or sarcastic comments. There were one or two believers here and there but the general sentiment seemed to be that of “meh, unimpressed”. The biggest reason for this could be the state of altcoins as a whole while $WLFI gets sold out.
