Zora, the Web3 social platform built on Base, is under fire for suspending top creator accounts without warning and basis.

22nd September, 2025 – Zora, the onchain social and NFT platform built on Ethereum’s Base Layer 2, is facing increasing backlash for suspending multiple high-profile creator accounts without clear justification. Users say the bans crashed token prices, stranded holders, and contradicted the platform’s promise of decentralization.
Although Zora operates on a permissionless blockchain, it enforces centralized, app-level moderation through its Terms of Service. These terms allow the team to restrict accounts “at their sole discretion.” This policy has drawn criticism for lacking transparency and accountability, especially when tokenized communities lose access overnight.
One of the most controversial cases is the suspension of the $Kazonomics token in September 2025. The creator behind the project, @TheRealNomics, saw his account and token disabled without prior notice. The token was moved to “sell-only” mode, wiping out value for over 4,200 holders — nearly half of Zora’s active user base.
The creator had recently clashed with Alabama Barker, an influencer onboarded by known scammer Sahil Arora. Nomics accused Barker of brand theft. Zora appeared to side with Barker, banning Nomics shortly afterward. Prominent users called the move “portfolio destruction” and accused the platform of enabling fraud.
Zora has been here before. Back in April 2025, shortly after the launch of the $ZORA token, the platform faced similar backlash. Several high-performing users, including @AntonProfiT, who brought in millions through mints and referrals were banned for “spam” activity. Notably, these bans came after the airdrop snapshot. Despite massive engagement, these users received no tokens.
The bans didn’t go unnoticed. Some argued they were selectively enforced, mostly affecting those who outperformed Zora’s own internal efforts. Others suspected the real motive was to reduce token dilution by cutting off top contributors.
The trend goes further back. In November 2024, Zora removed a fake NFT collection — but only after mounting community pressure. Even then, it withheld ETH refunds from the victims. Around the same time, Zora suspended multiple celebrity-linked accounts, including one associated with boxer Tyson Fury. These were tied to alleged fake promotions. After the bans, affected tokens were hidden and became unsellable inside the app — even though they remained technically tradable elsewhere.
The fallout has led to a growing campaign under the hashtag #ZoraScam. Critics warn that even top creators aren’t safe, and that moderation decisions can erase millions in token value — instantly and without recourse.
Creators like @Lukeee_23 call the system “whim-based.” Others see it as “centralized control in disguise.” The lack of a formal appeals process or clear communication from Zora’s leadership has only fueled the anger.
While Zora is built on Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer 2, its control over the app frontend gives it significant power. It can block trading within the app, even if trades remain possible on platforms like Uniswap. But many users — especially casual ones — never go that far. For them, an in-app ban is effectively a total lockout.
As of September 22, 2025, Zora has stayed silent. No official statement. In response, community leaders are urging users to export their wallets, secure their private keys, and stop treating Zora as a trustless platform.

@AbrakadabraCorp @zora @tbtstl @slavakim_ @js_horne @coinbase @base @jessepollak My Zora account, which I have worked on with all my heart for the past month, was suddenly closed 10 days ago without any reason being given. I submitted a ticket and only received the short reply you can see in the screenshot — but no action has been taken since then. https://t.co/YIN7gNP9H9
I was wondering who is this user that I followed, turned out it's #kazonomics who got banned by @zora So being in zora is not censorship resistant, even you're a big creator. How about small creator like me? https://t.co/jmT4A7t5MO
