Aztec is a privacy-focused Layer 2 blockchain built on Ethereum that enables programmable private transactions using zero-knowledge proofs. It allows developers to create decentralized applications where users can interact privately while still benefiting from Ethereum’s security. Aztec combines smart contract functionality with advanced cryptography to deliver confidential DeFi, payments, and on-chain logic without exposing sensitive data.
Aztec was created to address one of blockchain’s core limitations: lack of privacy. Public blockchains like Ethereum offer transparency but expose transaction data, balances, and interactions. For financial applications, enterprise use cases, and personal payments, this transparency can be restrictive. Aztec aims to introduce programmable privacy, allowing users and developers to control what data is revealed while maintaining decentralization and security.
As of now, Aztec does not have a publicly launched native token. The network focuses on infrastructure and privacy tooling rather than a token-driven economy. However, future governance or ecosystem incentive mechanisms may introduce a native token if the protocol transitions toward decentralized governance. Users currently interact with Aztec using Ethereum assets bridged to its Layer 2 environment.
