Sam Altman, best known as the CEO of OpenAI, is also the co-founder of Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency and digital identity project launched in 2021. Alongside Alex Blania and Max Novendstern, he created Worldcoin with the aim of building a universal digital identity system (“World ID”) and distributing cryptocurrency to people worldwide through biometric verification, specifically iris scans using the project’s hardware device called the “Orb.”

Altman’s vision behind Worldcoin ties to his broader concerns about artificial intelligence, wealth distribution, and the future of the global economy. By combining crypto with proof-of-personhood, Worldcoin seeks to address issues like Sybil attacks in digital networks and to create a foundation for equitable access to financial systems in an AI-driven world.
