21st December 2025 – Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), one of the most vocal crypto advocates in U.S. politics, has announced she will not seek reelection. Her six-year Senate term ends in January 2027.
In a statement released Friday, Lummis said the decision came after exhausting sessions this fall. “I am a devout legislator, but I feel like a sprinter in a marathon. The energy required doesn’t match up,” she wrote.
Lummis has been a central figure in nearly every major crypto bill over the past few years. Earlier in 2025, she helped pass the GENIUS Act, the first stablecoin framework signed into law. The bill established a federal standard for stablecoin issuance and trading.
She also co-authored the ongoing market structure bill with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. That bill aims to clarify regulatory roles for the SEC and CFTC and would legalize much of crypto activity in the U.S. Though first drafted in 2022, it has faced delays and remains unpassed.
The bill still awaits markup by the Senate Banking Committee, and with midterm elections coming in 2026, progress could slow further. Its passage may now become one of the final milestones of Lummis’ congressional career.
Lummis is often referred to as the “Bitcoin Senator.” In 2025, she introduced the , a bill proposing that the U.S. government purchase $80 billion worth of Bitcoin over five years. The plan aimed to establish a to strengthen the country’s financial position and hedge against inflation.
She also served as chair of the first Senate subcommittee dedicated to crypto under the Banking Committee.
The announcement drew swift responses from the crypto community. Ji Kim, CEO of the Crypto Council for Innovation, said Lummis was “a leading champion for digital assets in Washington,” and that her leadership helped elevate crypto policy in the U.S.
Lummis entered the Senate in 2021 after years of public service in Wyoming. Her decision not to run marks the end of one of the crypto industry’s most consistent voices in Congress.
She plans to spend her final year focused on pushing major crypto legislation through Congress before her departure in January 2027.
Real voices. Real reactions.
