TRON Founder Justin Sun Sues Bloomberg Over Crypto Holdings Disclosure

TRON founder Justin Sun has taken Bloomberg to court in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, trying to stop the media outlet from publishing what he calls highly sensitive details about his cryptocurrency portfolio. Sun says the move would break promises of confidentiality, violate his privacy, and put both him and his family at risk.

How the Dispute Began

Earlier this year, Bloomberg approached Sun about including him in its Bloomberg Billionaires Index, a ranking of the world’s 500 wealthiest people. Sun says he only agreed after Bloomberg reporters and editors assured him, both verbally and in writing, that any crypto portfolio details would remain strictly confidential.

According to Sun, the data he provided was meant only to verify his total net worth. Bloomberg, he says, promised not to disclose individual token amounts. The information was shared through a secure channel, and Sun’s legal team made it clear that it was “for verification purposes only.” Internal messages cited in the lawsuit reportedly show Bloomberg staff agreeing to these terms and pledging to delete the data after use.

The Alleged Breach of Trust

In late July, Sun’s team received a draft of his profile for the Billionaires Index. The document, he claims, not only contained inaccuracies but also revealed a detailed breakdown of his holdings by token type and amount. Sun says this level of detail is unusual for Bloomberg’s index, pointing out that other crypto billionaires like Coinbase’s Brian Armstrong and Binance’s Changpeng Zhao are not shown with such specifics unless they have already shared them publicly.

Sun believes publishing the breakdown could let blockchain analysts link his wallets. Once that happens, he argues, it could make him a target for hacking, theft, extortion, or even physical harm. He also points to past incidents where wealthy crypto holders have faced kidnapping or extortion attempts.

Legal Action and Demands

Sun’s lawyers sent a cease-and-desist letter on August 2 asking Bloomberg to stick to listing only his overall net worth and general asset categories. The next day, Bloomberg’s newsroom counsel allegedly confirmed plans to publish the detailed figures soon.

The lawsuit accuses Bloomberg of public disclosure of private facts and breaking the promises that convinced Sun to share his information. He is seeking a temporary restraining order, preliminary and permanent injunctions to stop the release, and reimbursement of legal costs. He has also requested a jury trial.
